The logos for Roppongi Hills were chosen through an international competition. The selected winner, British designer Jonathan Barnbrook, came up with a series of innovative logos intimately integrating design and typography.
The six circles that form the basis of the logos, were suggested by the meaning of the kanji characters (ideograms) for Roppongi, which translates as six trees, and were then abstracted to become the circles you see. The very contemporary idea of integrating the typography of Roppongi in alphabetical orthography within the logo (six circles) was then conceived.
Moreover, the six circles also represent the diversity of Roppongi Hills with its many and varied activities such as work, residency, leisure, culture, shopping and entertainment, and provide easy and instant recognition of the concept and the meaning of Roppongi Hills.

In addition, in order to represent the diversity of Roppongi Hills, Barnbrook's design will not be limited to one fixed pattern, but will actually consist of a series of logos, two main logos and four sub-logos, with changing typographical style around the six circles.
This idea and style is a new experiment, both in the international arena and in terms of design approach, and it perfectly symbolizes the 21st Century reality of Roppongi Hills as the true cultural heart of Tokyo. |
